Before you begin with any kind of video production or setting up your YouTube channel, the first most important thing that you must do, is to carefully think about the niche you would like to operate in.
If you pick the wrong niche, you could end up wasting a lot of your time with no just rewards in the end. So to help you with choosing your niche, make it easy, fun, and straight forward, here are a few tips to follow:
Make a list of things you are truly passionate about.
Can you become the best at it in the world, or, one of the best.
How can you make money from it.
One easy way to find your niche, or field of expertise, is to write a list of your...
Education
Job or self-taught skills
Hobbies
Then think about how you could benefit others with your knowledge.
Once you have an idea on which niche you'd like to operate in, you're ready to move on to the next step.
Video Editing Program
One of the best video editing programs for beginners is Windows Live Movie Maker. It's very basic and easy to learn. There are no fancy features, so newbies won't need to feel intimidated. Best of all it's free. Windows Live Movie Maker comes already installed on PCs (iMovies for Macs), but if for some reason your computer does not have the program, it can be downloaded from the Microsoft website for free. Though this program is basic and does not contain any fancy editing features, with enough creativity, you can make some awesome and very professional looking videos. Do searches on Google for free animated backgrounds, or use one of your own videos for a professional looking intro and outro.
Camera
You may already have a video camera and a webcam, so depending on what kind of videos you want to make, will depend on the type of camera you will need. As a beginner, if you don't already have a camera, you may wish to start with your web cam. Another camera that is basic and affordable is the Vivitar DVR 410. This camera has video and picture taking capabilities. The video quality is not that great but good enough to start out with. You will need to make sure the settings on the camera are set to the best settings and, though it is a very basic camera, around $25.00, you can make the images sharper by choosing the best SD card, like Sandisk Ultra or PNY Professional, and at least 32GB, or more if you plan on recording a lot of video. Depending on which model of the DVR you buy, you may require either 3AA batteries, or 4AAA. You must choose the best batteries like Energizer Ultra Lithium, otherwise your batteries will drain with the first use!
Not many people realize this, but there is something most of us carry with us every day... an iPhone or other smartphone. The iPhone gives exceptional picture and video quality and sound, as well as most smartphones. In fact, many professional video marketers are now using their iPhones or smartphones for video production!
Another device that may be of help is a digital voice recorder, like the Sony digital voice recorder. This is totally optional but could improve the quality of your sound.
Lighting
You may also need some kind of lighting solution...
Sunshine
Halogen
Household lamp
If you plan on purchasing a new HD camera like a Canon or a Sony, you will need a fairly new computer - a PC or Mac. 2GB of RAM should do.
Setting Up Your Channel
Once you become familiar with your editing program, you're ready for the next step which is setting up your YouTube channel. This next step with require three things:
Your YouTube Channel
Your Video blog
Your list building mechanism
So here's how this works...
You will use your YouTube channel for getting a lot of attention, which you will direct to your video blog (which is just a normal blog with your videos embedded in it), then use your list building mechanism to capture the contact details of the people who visit your blog.
Setting up your YouTube channel is easy. Just go to YouTube.com to create your free account. But first, there are a few things to do to make sure your channel is optimized and that it will give you the best possible chance of getting found on the YouTube and Google search engines.
So here are a few tips for making sure you set up your YouTube channel to give you the best chance of success:
Choose A Name That Draws Them IN
When choosing the name of your channel, which will be your channel username, think very carefully about the name, you choose, and don't pick out something out of the blue. Choose a name that is closely related to what your videos will be about. The channel name will be the same as your website name. Think about a memorable name, if you can, and make certain that it contains the main keyword phrases that you hope to rank for.
All of this will help for ranking better in the search engines for your keywords. As an example, say you plan on operating in the auto detailing niche, instead of choosing a name like whatchamacallit234, instead think of a name related to auto detailing, like, ProDetailTips. You'll get the idea. Your YouTube channel address will then read like...
This will increase your chances of getting clicked on more often. Now if someone in the auto detailing industry sees the name whatchamacallit or prodetailtips, guess which one will get the most clicks?
Do keyword research first, to make sure you create a channel name that is both keyword rich, but that it also makes sense in English for your audience.
Build Your Audience & Subscriptions
Here is something that not many people think of as important, or don't do too well at. It's adding the right kind of information about your channel, information about yourself and/or your business.
The two main reasons why this is important are:
If you include the right kind of content on your channel, you'll be able to build audience/subscriptions with anyone who visits your site.
At the same time you'll also make certain that your channel will rank for the keyword phrases that you would like to rank for in the search engines.
Make certain that you enter as much detail in your channel fields as you possibly can, and also make sure to add tags (keywords) that you want to rank for, though you may not rank for them just yet.
Design your Channel
Next you'll want to work on a logo and your channel art. YouTube offers you a template on the correct dimensions for your channel art. You want a nice looking design so you come across as a professional.
This information may come as a bit too much just for creating videos, but it's a good deal of information to get you started in your YouTube venture.
Check out other videos on YouTube, similar to the videos you'd like to create. Have a look at the names of the users, and get an idea from their channel art.
Here's to your Success!
